Between June 20th, 2023 and August 16th, 2024, Luke Wenke spent roughly a year’s worth of time on federal remand at three detention facilities: the Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville, New York; the Cattaraugus County Jail in Little Valley, NY, and the Orleans County Jail in Albion, NY. During that time, he sent no less than 240 letters to various individuals and entities.

This wouldn’t necessarily constitute a large number of letters for an inmate, given the limited activities available to those who are incarcerated. But Luke Wenke received just 20 pieces of correspondence, the vast majority of which came from his public defenders. The lack of reciprocity, coupled with his tendency to write multiple letters to people who don’t respond, is telling.

The judge, prosecutor, and other parties involved in Luke Wenke’s federal criminal case have discussed his letter writing obsession in court, but they focused mainly on the mail Wenke sent directly to the court and to victims who reported the unwanted correspondence. I don’t know if they examined his mail logs, and while the volume of outgoing letters may not surprise those who are familiar with Wenke, it conveys the severity of his habit.
